Some memories are priceless, and many of us store our lives in the forms of pictures and videos on their computers or external hard drives. If you didn't have the hindsight to make a backup and those memories have been lost, its difficult to describe the sense of despair you might feel. Depending on your situation however, there may still be hope.
If you had information on a laptop/PC that no longer turns on, does not boot correctly or has been damaged, there is a good chance the hard drive is still able to be recovered and the information extracted- provided the hard drive itself is not damaged.
External hard drives are a great place to backup important information, as long as they aren't the only copy of the information. If yours is no longer accessible, check to see if you can hear a faint clicking from it.
If it does click then there is a high chance the data is not able to be extracted at a reasonable cost.
If it does not click there is a high chance that only the enclosure was damaged, and the data on the hard drive is still intact.
A NAS in your infrastructure is a powerful tool, but should never be a single point of failure. Depending on the RAID setup of your NAS, you may have to use some advanced software to attempt any sort of recovery. If the RAID was set to JBOD, the recovery should be fairly straight forward.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if you think you have lost data. Many of us have been in that situation and want to make sure you have the best chances of getting that information back.
